Henry L. Mencken at work in his office in his home on 1524 Hollins Street. It was here he edited the American Mercury and wrote "The American Language," and it was here he spent many satisfying years. Mencken's residence was a house of guns and seidels, brass and cigars, but it also was a house of books. It contained a house library of more than 2,000 volumes, even after tons of literary material were removed to start a Mencken Collection at Pratt Library in the 1940's.
