Books of Photography by A. Aubrey Bodine |
|
Eleven books of A. Aubrey Bodine photography have been published. The five most recent books have been released by Jennifer B. Bodine, Aubrey's daughter. In August 2005, Jennifer released Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country. This was the first time in over 30 years a collection of 286 of Bodine's finest work are available in a book. Some of these images have never been seen before, and some not seen since they were originally published in the Baltimore Sunday Sunpapers. In 2011 Jennifer's second book, Bodine's City, was released. Again published by Schiffer Books, this is an incredibly high quality volume. Printed in tri-tone (meaning three shades of black) and using a stochastic pattern, this process is similar to the one we use to produce reprints of Bodine's images. As a result it has been priced slightly higher than Jennifer's first book. Again, you will receive a signed copy when you order from our website. Jennifer's third book is Bodine's Industry, The Dignity of Work, released in 2013. Bodine recorded people at work in their daily jobs. I have always been struck by how Bodine captured the man (and woman) behind the job. As recent economic events have demonstrated, a job can not be taken for granted. Jennifer's fourth book is Trains Photography of A. Aubrey Bodine, released in 2018. This book is A. Aubrey Bodine’s archive of train photographs, chronicling mid twentieth century rail transportation and the people working on the railroad. Bodine’s images of steam and diesel locomotives document an era passed. Released in 2020, Annapolis Photography of A. Aubrey Bodine is Jennifer's fifth book. These 168 images demonstrate Bodine’s pictorialist and modernist photographic eye for mansions, government buildings, city streets, dock scenes, and sailboat racing - encapsulating the essence of Annapolis from 1928 to 1970. The six earlier books were organized from a regional perspective or a locale. They collect the images celebrating the rich diversity of the local geography - Maryland, Virginia and, of course, the Chesapeake Bay. Aubrey felt a deep love for this region and saw its beauty - he allowed us to see his vision through his powerful images. Two earlier books were released after Aubrey died. Legend In His Time, is a biography written by Aubrey's editor at the Baltimore Sun Magazine, Hal Williams. It was written shortly after Aubrey's death as a retrospective look at the life and work of a character he had grown to know quite well. Baltimore Pictorialist, looks at the art of A. Aubrey Bodine with a focus on the pictorialist style which Aubrey employed so well. It presents five decades of Aubrey's art, sets the context for pictorialism, and the effect of pictorial photography in the newspaper. There are numerous other books illustrated with images from the A. Aubrey Bodine collection. (updated 10/10/2020) |
